Laura Bleehen’s Cambridge side may have lost out in the last minute to Oxford at Iffley Road recently, but they will still have a notable landmark in their sights if they can reap revenge at Twickenham on Saturday, 2 April.
Cambridge have won the last four Varsity Matches and will have a record fifth win in a row on their minds when they head back to the home of English rugby for the first time in three years.
The last three games with Oxford on Varsity Match day have all been nail-bitingly close affairs. It was 10-5 at Leicester last year and the two previous encounters at Twickenham ended 8-5 in favour of the Light Blues.
A convert from football, Bleehen will be winning her third Blue in the Cambridge front row. She also has three appearances in goal against Oxford in the round ball game.
Last year’s win matched the previous best winning run by Cambridge from 2008-11 (13-12, 9-0, 25-0, 22-0) and now they are 80 minutes away from improving on that.
Oxford can still boast the longest winning sequence in the women’s Varsity Match with 13 on the trot from 1989 to 2001.
