In the third of our Varsity Match Memories video series with Old Blues, former Cambridge, Scotland and British and Irish Lions captain Gavin Hastings talks through his finest memories of The Varsity Match and the impact it had on his illustrious rugby career.

Gavin Hastings OBE earned two Cambridge Blues in 1984 and 1985, winning The Varsity Match as the Light Blues’ captain in the latter. The Full Back went on to earn 61 caps for Scotland, 20 as captain and was the leading scorer in Rugby World Cups with 227 until Jonny Wilkinson surpassed that total in 2007.

He featured in the victorious British and Irish Lions tour of Australia in 1989 and was captain for the 1993 tour of New Zealand. He is the record Lions’ scorer in Tests with 66 points and was inducted onto the International Rugby Hall of Fame in 2003.https://www.youtube.com/embed/oMNxI4mRiIQ
