All the teams involved in The Varsity Matches are delighted to be using the Rhino team-wear and balls again for the next three years.
This follows the initial three-year partnership which
has been a great success for all parties, both on and off the pitch.
The players have really appreciated the tight-fitting of the match wear, and both players and supporters alike have loved the off-pitch range, with the mid-layer a particular favourite worn around the streets of Oxford and Cambridge.
The team administrators at both university rugby clubs have found Dave Reynish and his team to be extremely supportive and responsive, especially around the normal rush in advance of the season.
The other great success has been the new Vortex ball that Rhino introduced in the 2019 season. Hookers, scrum halves and goal kickers have found the Vortex to be the ball of choice, with the highlight being the 100% kick-success registered on Varsity Match day.

We are proud to be named as one of the main official partners of The Varsity Matches, where Oxford University plays Cambridge University in the “Battle of the Blues”.
The game between these two great rivals is steeped in history and goes all the way back to 1872. Next year will be the 150th Anniversary of the match and we are delighted to agree a 4 year sponsorship deal supporting this tremendous rugby event.
As a global legal recruitment company, Blue Pencil feels honoured to be supporting The Varsity Matches, especially now that the Women’s match has the same opportunity to play at Twickenham, and is one of the very few occasions where Women’s amateur rugby gets to play at the home of English Rugby.
Not only will the matches boost the profile of Blue Pencil, they will also provide a fantastic opportunity to network with alumni of both Oxford and Cambridge. Many lawyers have played in the match itself: indeed, the Blue Pencil logo carries the colours of both Oxford and Cambridge.
In 1994, Liam Mooney, the founder of Blue Pencil, became a Cambridge Blue himself for the first time. He said: “The Varsity Match is a tremendous rugby event. I feel very privileged to have played in the game in 1994 and 1995 and it provided me with so many opportunities. Rugby as a sport is a great leveller.
The Varsity Matches company is delighted to be working with Walker Slater. This will provide an excellent opportunity for fans of the Varsity Matches, both women and men, to access both high quality garments for smart leisure-wear and a wide range of merchandise to capture the opportunity to buy the perfect gift for friends and family.
Following in the footsteps of the Scottish Rugby Union who partnered with Walker Slater to create a very stylish bespoke tweed for fans and players, the Varsity Match Company can now offer this brand new Varsity Matches Tweed.
Paul Walker, of Walker Slater goes on to say:
“Walker Slater are thrilled to work with the Varsity Match on their tweed collection, using a bespoke Borders tweed honing the colours of the two teams – Oxford and Cambridge, the balance is perfect. The cloth represents equally the two teams and the colours are complementary to each other making for an interesting and stand-out herringbone cloth. With our home in Scotland, we are pleased to have a partnership which grew from and was developed through our Covent Garden store.”
