Charlie Watson’s ongoing injury woes may have robbed him of the chance of leading the Light Blues into the historic 150th anniversary Varsity Match, but Cambridge will still be in very good hands when they take to the field at Twickenham.

Captain on the day will be Welshman Stephen Leonard, who handed over the captaincy to Saracens star Watson after two years in the hot seat. Leonard led his side to victory in the last game played at Twickenham in 2019 and was also in charge at Leicester’s Welford Road last summer.

With four Blues already behind him, the Emmanuel medic will be aiming for a third win in the fixture. He was on the bench in 2015, played in 29017, 18, 19 and 21 and has also played for England Counties.

He will become the first Cambridge player to lead the side in three Varsity Matches. John Carter did the same for Oxford from 2011-13.
